This was a good week. I finally got into the indoor training routine by doing 3 good workouts Tuesday-Thursday. On Tuesday I did 2x20minutes at 255 watts, on Wednesday I did a 1×40 at 245 watts, and on Thursday I did 35 minutes at 235 watts. I also got in 3 hours of riding outside over the weekend which is always nice. If you will notice, my “sweet spot” (230-276 watts) time was 1 hour and 52 minutes. This is a big improvement over last week and is what I would like to keep doing if at all possible. What is interesting is that I had more time in the sweet spot this week than in my longest week this year which was a little over 10 hours of riding, all of it outside. Time in the sweet spot was about 90 minutes. That shows how powerful indoor trainer workouts can be. They focus your effort and allow a lot of “work” in a short time. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’d rather have that 10 hour week of outdoor rides, which included some fantastic climbing, over the week I just had in terms of “fun on the bike”. But I’ll take the fitness I get from a few concentrated hours of riding indoors knowing that it should make my outdoor rides in 2009 even more fun.
The Week Ahead
This week I plan on doing an “FTP” test on Saturday (I’ll post the protocol for this) to see where I am at so I will ride a little easier this week to allow me to be pretty much rested for Saturday. I will still get in the time, just at a little lower level, probably 230-240 watts which is at the low end of the sweet spot. I’ll ride outside after the Saturday test as well on Sunday assuming the weather cooperates.
