A Real Crappy Beer
What if I told you I was going to drink a “crappy” beer from a brewer who doesn’t have his own brewery? You’d probably say, “go right ahead Mark, but don’t ask me to do that”. Well, I found a beer that is exactly that, although you may just want to drink it. The beer is called Beer Geek Brunch-Weasel and its brewed by Mikkeller. I recently did a review of their Beer Geek Breakfast and was very impressed.
Bring On The Poop
The unique thing about Beer Geek Brunch Weasel is that is is made with coffee from beans that have been eaten and literally pooped out of the weasel-like Civet cat. The partially digested beans are collected, cleaned, roasted, and made into (very expensive) coffee. You can read more about the coffee here. The best (I think) line in the explanation is this “The feces are ready, but from the feces to the coffee is another matter”. Sounds good to me
What Goes Best With Poop Coffee?
What exactly do you eat with beer made with poop coffee? Well, since this is basically a Coffee Stout I figured I’d have it with a brunch of pancakes, bacon, eggs, and Honeydew melon after I got back from my long Sunday morning bike ride. I figured it would be like drinking a cup of coffee with my meal. With that, on to the review:
Appearance: This is definite “stout dark” with a nice dark tan head that sticks around and has excellent lacing, comparable to the Beer Geek Breakfast. Poured into my over sized wine glass it looks delicious just sitting there.
Smell: An excellent smell wafts from the glass with a ton of coffee, dark roasted malt, and chocolate aromas. It’s an intense smell and hints at what you will get when you taste the beer.
Taste: Coffee, lots of strong coffee, is the predominant taste that hits you right off the bat. There’s also a wonderful chocolate flavor that is intertwined with the coffee. I didn’t notice any acidity like I did in the Beer Geek Breakfast. Maybe the higher quality coffee is the reason for this. The dark fruit makes another appearance as well. There is a bit of hop bitterness which is enough to cut through the beer on the finish. The mouthfeel is excellent with the dark roasted coffee and chocolate. This is a full bodied beer, it pretty much coats the mouth with coffee and chocolate goodness. The 10.9% ABV is very well hidden.
Drinkability: Considering the higher ABV, this drinks very, very well. It goes down very smoothly leaving a trail of coffee in it’s wake.
The Verdict
All kidding and poop references aside, Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel is an excellent beer that delivers in all aspects! The coffee aroma and flavor is perfect (if you like coffee, which I do). The taste is creamy with tons of coffee, plus chocolate, malt, and dark fruit. There is no acidity at all. The drinkability is excellent, especially considering the ABV of 10.9%. I think this is a bit better than the Beer Geek Breakfast, mainly because of the lack of acidity I got on the taste. The coffee aroma and smell is very strong, yet smooth. I guess the Weasel Poop does make a difference:-) Get one if you can. It is fairly expensive ($12.99 for the 1/2 liter bottle here in Atlanta) but well worth it, at least once, if you like full bodied stouts with coffee and chocolate.
Here’s the score:
1. Appearance- 9 points (out of 10)
2. Smell- 10 points (out of 10)
3. Taste- 19 points (out of 20)
4. Drinkability- 8 points (out of 10)
Total 46 (out of 50) Points -5 Mugs

I was blown away by this beer when I first had it. I think it’s superb and I’m very glad I decided to buy two when I had the chance (it was £6.50 a bottle so maybe a touch cheaper than in the US).
I’m trying to find and drink as much Mikkeller as possible right now, I think it’s a brilliant brewery. The latest one is collaboration between them and Brewdog (and you know how much I like BrewDog!) which is a barley wine partially aged in speyside oak whisky barrels. Nice.
I’ve had the Simcoe and the Cascade single hop Mikkellers. They are both good but they are very ‘condensed’ in their flavour – nothing subtle in there! They are good for seeing the unique qualities of the individual hops though and I’ll buy any others that I see (I’ll buy any Mikkellers that I see!). $5 is fairly expensive, but then it is a limited edition imported brew.
They also do a couple of wild ales too which might be of interest?
After the “regular” Beer Geek Breakfast I figured the Weasel would be very good. I wasn’t wrong. It is a very well balanced beer with all the right stuff. I will be picking up another bottle here real soon.
I’ve been impressed with the Mikkeller products I’ve had so far. I’m intrigued with their “single hop” IPA series. I think they would be a great way to learn the flavor profile of the various hop varieties. Have you had of them? Are they worth the money ($4.99/bottle)?
I’ll probably pick up a bottle or two of the single hop beers just to see what they are like. I really want to become better versed on the flavor profiles of the various hops varieties and these seem like a good way to do that. I’ll also check for some of the wild ales.
I need a second job to afford all this expensive beer but it’s all so good!
