Unibroue Trois Pistoles

A Beer From The Great White North

Way up North (at least compared to Atlanta), in Quebec Canada, is Unibroue.  I have wanted to try their beers for a while but have never gotten around to it.  Well, I was in the beer store and there on the end cap, staring me in the face, was the Trois Pistoles, a Belgian Strong Dark Ale.  I couldn’t ignore it and had to pick up the 4 pack:

Trois Pistoles is a very good beer.  The complex dark fruit/chocolate flavor is very well balanced.  There is a hint of the “funk” (from the Belgian yeast, I’m assuming) that I like so much.  The 9% ABV is very well hidden making drinkability very good.  Trois Pistoles is definitely a sipper.  This beer would go great with pretty much anything sweet, especially chocolate or fruit pies.  I really enjoyed the beer and am looking forward to drinking the remaining bottles.

Here is the score:

  1. Appearance- 8 points (out of 10)
  2. Smell- 9 points (out of 10)
  3. Taste- 18 points (out of 20)
  4. Drinkability- 9 points (out of 10)

Total 44 (out of 50) Points- A 4 Mug Rating

Mark, do yourself a favor and try their Maudite if you can find it. It is definitely my favorite beer from Unibroue..would love to see your take on it.

I will review the Maudite, probably in January. I’ve got a lot of beers on the bench to go through 1st. Tough work I know, but someone’s gotta do it :-)
