Lucky #7
Terrapin Beer Company has just released #7 in their semi-regular “Side Project” series of beers. This time Spike and the gang brewed up their take on a Saison, or Farmhouse Ale (a style of beer that was developed in the middle ages to satiate the thirst of Belgian farm workers). In typical side project fashion they took a basic recipe and put their own twist on it. This time they used oats and rye, along with other ingredients, to make Maggie’s Farmhouse Ale. I got my hands on a couple of bottles and decided to review it along with my “farmhouse flattened chicken”:
Appearance: Maggie’s pours a cloudy light honey color. The beer is cloudy and has a bright white head when poured fairly aggressively. Lacing is OK
Smell: There’s a bit of sweetness t the smell along with some “funk” which is nice for this style of beer.
Taste: There is a classic Saison taste to the beer with some Belgian breadiness and citrus like Orange and lemon. The body is on the “heavy light” side. There is a hint of bitterness on the finish.
Drinkability: This is an easy drinking beer with a good finish. The ABV is unknown as of Saturday night, July 25th but I’ll update it as soon as I know.
Well, I think the number 7 is a lucky one for Terrapin. Their take on a Saison has all the right components along with a nice, easy drinkability. The aroma and taste have that “barnyard funk” that is nice and earthy. There is also a nice citrus component and a touch of bitterness on the finish. The beer went very well with the grilled chicken off of the Big Green Egg. The citrus complemented the herbs and spices of the chicken. This is another good beer from Athens, GA. Get some if you can and try it yourself.
Here’s the score:
