Smithwick’s Ale And Irish Sausage With Potatoes

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

It’s the time of the year when everyone is a little bit Irish. To celebrate I decided to fix a “traditional” Irish meal of Sausages and Potatoes and picked an Irish beer that I hadn’t had before, Smithwick’s, to try with the food:

Well, the Sausages and Potatoes came out very well.  The Smithwick’s came out only average though.  To be honest, I didn’t have extremely high hopes for the beer.  The beer poured a nice reddish caramel color and had a nice, pillowy off white head.  Carbonation was good as well.  The aroma and flavor were very basic though.  There was nothing “bad” about the taste or smell, it was just extremely “uncomplex”.  It’s a very drinkable beer, and a much better choice than many macros but beyond that, not much.

Here is the score:

  1. Appearance- 7 points (out of 10)
  2. Smell-  5 points (out of 10)
  3. Taste- 12 points (out of 20)
  4. Drinkability- 8 points (out of 10)

Total 32 (out of 50) Points- A 3 Mug Rating

ABV 4.5%

Forget the beer, how was that sausage and potatoe creation?!! That stuff looked effing wonderful!
On the serious though, hats off for staying true to St. Patty’s day and going Irish. I find it too hard to find GOOD irish beer, so I just drank something Belgian instead. haha. Guiness is too watered down, and the others like Smithicks(pronounced without the h ‘smith-icks’ i believe) and Harp seem to be lacking in the flavor dept.

By the way, you should have your wife guest appear on a review.

      Hey Chad,

The sausage and potato dish was delicious! It is hard to find a decent Irish beer, besides Guinness but the Smithwicks is OK.

My wife has absolutely zero interest in appearing in one of my “little beer geek videos” as she calls them :-) She can’t drink anyway due to medication she takes. She definitely loves the food I cook though!
