New Belgium Fat Tire

Today, May 11th, is a special day for me.  Today is the day that one of my favorite Colorado breweries becomes available here in Georgia.  I’m talking about New Belgium Brewing, the craft brewery located in Fort Collins, Colorado, our old hometown.  Pam and I lived in Fort Collins from 1983 until 1998, when we left for Chicago.  In the early 1990′s Ft Collins became the epicenter of craft brewing in the Rocky Mtn states.  New Belgium was one of those breweries that helped the industry grow and Fat Tire was the beer that made it happen.  Today, Fat Tire has achieved cult status in the world of craft beer.

Here is the review:

Appearance: The beer pours a clear light amber color with a off white head that sticks around.  The lacing is good as is the carbonation.

Smell: Aromas of biscuit and carmel/fruit are present.  There’s not much else, and the smell is fairly balanced

Taste: There is a flavor much like the smell with malt, biscuit, and fruit.  Once again the flavor is well balanced.

Drinkability: This is a very drinkable beer.  The carbonation is good and the body is on the lighter side.  The relatively low ABV of 5.2% and lighter flavor makes this a smooth thirst quencher.

Fat Tire is a good/very good beer.  It looks good in the glass, has a pretty good aroma, and a taste that isn’t bad in any way.  The drinkability is very good as well.  This beer has attained a cult status in the beer world, and rightly so.  It delivers on the promise of a flavorful, well-made beer that is easy to drink and appealing to a wide range of tastes.  I have very fond memories of drinking Fat Tire when we lived in Fort Collins.  This is the beer that put New Belgium on the map.  I personally think some of their other beer are a little better, but this is a very good beer and well worth trying.  Enjoy!

Here’s the score:

1.  Appearance- 7 points (out of 10)
2. Smell- 7 points (out of 10)
3. Taste- 15 points (out of 20)
4. Drinkability- 8 points (out of 10)
