I'm Your BBQ Guinea Pig
Have you ever wanted to try a new BBQ recipe out on your grill or smoker but were afraid of how it might taste? Well, here is your chance to have me be your BBQ guinea pig! I am starting a new feature here on Barbecue Cooking Guide called “Tell BBQ Guy What To Cook”, where you pick and choose what meat, spices, sauces, and cooking method I will use to make a (hopefully) delicious barbecue dinner for my wife and I.
I came up with this idea while riding my bike and wishing I had a bunch of food to eat. I started going through all of the ingredients I had in my pantry and thinking of what I could make when I got back from my ride. Then it hit me, “this would be a neat way to help others make great BBQ”. I think it will be a great way to come up with a series of “how to” articles and videos to help everyone cook better BBQ by showing how to combine various ingredients and methods.
In order to make this as interactive as possible I have decided to have you vote for the various choices through a survey. I will use the choices with the highest # of votes to make a dinner on my Big Green Egg that my wife and I will eat. I plan on recording the steps by creating a video of the process that I will post to my YouTube channel. That way you will be able to see exactly how I made the meal and the thought process behind mixing the various ingredients. I will post the survey here and you can register your votes. At the end of each survey I will total everything up and start shopping! I think there are a bunch of ways we can go with this such as different themes or deciding on a meat (or vegetable) then adding everything else.
As a test I created a survey the other night and broadcast it to my Twitter followers. I gave them until today at noon to reply. I received 5 responses and here is what they were (this will open in a new window).
So, my first edition of “Tell BBQ Guy What To Cook” will be is:
-Pork Butt
-Cooked “low and slow”
-A rub containing salt, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, paprika, thyme, black pepper, brown sugar, chili powder, and cinnamon (I took the top 9)
-A vinegar based sauce
I’ll get the meat, and mix and apply the rub tomorrow (Saturday) then BBQ it for 6-8 hours on Sunday. I will also get an appropriate beer and give you my impressions of that as well.
I am excited about doing this. But, all of this video thing is completely new to me so don’t expect the stuff I put on YouTube to be Oscar worthy, yet. But, I think that over time, and with your feedback, this can become something very unique and valuable to BBQ lovers everywhere.
If you like this idea please spread the news! The more participation we get, the better the results.
Stay tuned!
