Lagunitas Pils

It’s Pilsner Time

The Summer heat is upon us.  As the temperature goes up a lot of us like to drop the temperature on the beer we drink.  If you find yourself craving a cold beer on a hot day, a Pilsener might be just the beer to drink.  I had a six-pack of Lagunitas Pils in the fridge and decided to have one with some pizza I was fixing on the Big Green Egg:

Appearance: The glass fills up with a nice golden color beer that is very clear.  There were a lot of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass and the head was a nice white.  Lacing was pretty good.  This beer looked great in the glass.

Smell: The beer gives off a spicy and malty aroma w/Lemon, Pear, and Apple.  There is a hint of hop bitterness coming from the Saaz hops that Lagunitas uses in the beer.

Taste: This beer is a little heavier in the mouth than I expected. There is a good malt flavor w/vanilla, Lemon, and Apple.  There is a hint of grain as well.  There’s a hint of bitterness in the finish after the malt.  The “late” aftertaste is a bit harsh which detracts from the taste some.

Drinkability: The ABV is 5.3% but the body of the beer seems heavier than that.  It drinks fine but the little bit of harshness at the very end.

Lagunitas Pils is a good beer which will satisfy your thirst on a warm Summer day.  It has a good flavor and aroma but is just a bit harsh on the finish.  If I compare this directly to the Sierra Nevada Summerfest, the Summerfest would win in a head to head “throwdown”.  Either of these beers though, along with many of the other craft brewed pilsener beers, will be a ton more flavorful than any of the “Macro” lagers (like the Coors Light I had) in terms of giving you real beer flavor.  Try one out and let me know what you think.

Here’s the score:

1.  Appearance- 8 points (out of 10)
2. Smell- 6 points (out of 10)
3. Taste- 12 points (out of 20)
4. Drinkability- 6 points (out of 10)

Total 32 (out of 50) Points-3 Mugs

I wish I had the motivation to cook up these delicious looking dinners like you always do..lol.

I’ve had a few brews from Lagunitas, they always seem OK but nothing I would rave about. Definitely worth a try but not a beer I would make it a point to purchase regularly.

As a side note, there are a few beers I would love to see reviews on:

    - Longtrail Belgian White (unfiltered wheat beer)
    - Lefthand Brewing Co. Milk Stout
    - Youngs Double Chocolate Stout
    - Dogfish Head World Wide Stout
    - Wexford Irish Cream Ale

I spent so many $$$’s on the Big Green Egg, I have to use it! I’m going to do a video “tour” of the Big Green Egg soon.

I really enjoyed the Hop Stoopid and the IPA was good (I could drink this all day). The Pils is OK as well.

I’ll do my best to get the beers you’ve suggested and review them. I haven’t seen the Longtrail or Wexford in the stores but I’ll ask.
