Kirkland Pale Ale Under The Steps

Too Much Water

OK, I’ve spent most of tonight (Friday) under the steps in the basement sucking up water that is making its way into the house after a heavy rain.  I posted a short video earlier showing what I was doing and one of the viewers suggested I do a beer review from the basement.  So, ever willing to please you, the viewers/readers, here is that review:

Kirkland Pale Ale is surprisingly good.  I guess I shouldn’t be surprised because just about everything “Kirkland” (Costco Wholesale’s house brand) is pretty decent.  We’ve been members of Costco for 11 years and haven’t been disappointed yet.  The Pale Ale was well balanced in both aroma and taste. Although not real complex, the beer had all the right stuff that a Pale Ale should have.  It looked pretty good in the glass and left some nice lacing.  Drinkability was good as well.  While I don’t think it’s as good as Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale, it is a solid choice, especially for the money.  The Pale Ale was part of a mixed case that has a six pack each of the Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, German Lager, and Amber Ale.  The beer says that it is brewed in Utica, NY so I’m thinking that it is Matt Brewing (the makers of Saranac) that is doing the brewing of this beer.  If you have a Costco membership go to your local store and see if they carry the beer.  You have to buy the whole case, but I think it’s worth it.

Here is the score:

  1. Appearance- 8 points (out of 10)
  2. Smell- 6 points (out of 10)
  3. Taste- 14 points (out of 20)
  4. Drinkability- 8 points (out of 10)

Total 36 (out of 50) Points- A 3 Mug Rating

Mark, I have family in Utica and can tell you first hand that the Matt brewing company does brew for a few other brewers outside their own Saranac/Utica Club line (including Brooklyn Beer and Sam Adams). I wouldn’t be surprised to see that they also brew for places such as Costco.

Yeah, I’m almost certain that they do the beers for Costco. Matt has a good track record and Costco always seems to use quality suppliers. I think Matt also does some stuff for Trader Joes, as does Unibroue up in Quebec.

Nice review, hope that leak straightens out. Why not just try absorbent pillows or something?… or it this just an excuse to drinks beers in the basement? LOL
I really like pale ales, so I will shoot in to Cosco and see if I can pick this up. a case for $18 is a good price for better crafted beers.

The leak isn’t that bad, more of a nuisance than anything. I have started looking at those absorbent pillow things. They might be just the ticket, at least til the ground dries out some. Definitely give the Costco beers a try. For the price, they are a very good value.
