This Dunkelweizen from Trader Joes promises authentic taste at a budget price. At $5.99 a six-pack here in Atlanta, it’s a good price. I picked one up while doing my regular weekly shopping to give it a try:
Appearance: This beer is unfiltered and pours a fairly cloudy caramel color with obvious sediment/yeast in the glass. The head is soapy and pretty much white. The beer looks good in the glass.
Smell: Banana bread in a glass is an accurate description. There is obvious clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and banana aromas along with a slight sweetness.
Taste: There is a definite clove, banana, nutmeg taste with some sweetness as well. The taste isn’t real strong but definitely there and noticeable.
Drinkability: This is a very drinkable beer. It is relatively lighter bodied with enough carbonation and a pretty clean finish. The lower ABV helps as well.
ABV: 5.2%
I liked this beer, especially for the price of $5.99 a six pack. It is a good example of the Dunkelweizen style although it isn’t too complex. If you have a Trader Joe’s in your area that sells beer do yourself a favor and pick some up and try it for yourself.
