Holy Makerel Mack In Black
Up On The Roof
Our yard is full of trees and that means lots of leaves. We’re going to get gutter covers, but until then I have to clean out the gutters “by hand” and yesterday was one of those days. To really get the gutters clean, especially the ones on the upper story, I have to climb up on the roof. Now, ladders and roofs aren’t my favorite place, but I’m getting better with them. But I still utter a lot of choice words while I’m up there. After risking my life on the roof without killing myself I decided to have a beer to celebrate…
Pomegranate Beer From Florida
Over the last several months I have had a couple of requests to try a beer from Florida called Holy Mackerel Mack In Black. It is brewed by Gordash Beer Company out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida who uses two small batch breweries in Melbourne, FL and Greenville, SC to actually brew the beer under their supervision. Mack In Black is a Strong Ale brewed with Pomegranate juice. I picked up a four-pack at Greens’s Beverage here in Atlanta. Here’s the review:
Holy Mackerel Is This Beer Good
Mack In Black is a great beer. The more I drank it the better it got. At the end of the bottle I was really liking the beer. The flavors and aromas were great and it was pretty easy to drink given the 8% ABV. I did get some of the fruit sweetness form the Pomegranate as well as a lot of coffee and chocolate. Everything was well blended. There was just a hint of bitterness at the end followed by nice espresso flavors. Mack In Black would go great with any kind of grilled meat, especially beef, as well as BBQ. I could see having this with seafood as well, something like Oysters or Crab Cakes comes to mind. Dessert would be another good pairing. Definitely try this if you can!
Here is the score:
- Appearance- 8 points (out of 10)
- Smell- 8 points (out of 10)
- Taste- 19 points (out of 20)
- Drinkability- 8 points (out of 10)
Total 43 (out of 50) Points- A 4 Mug Rating

This is why I enjoy your reviews — you are always exposing me to not only beers that are new to me, but breweries that I have never even heard of before. I don’t believe we get this in Rochester, but I will ask next time I am at my local beer stop.
I’m always amazed by how many different beers there are. I try to find a balance between reviews of widely available beers and specialty brews that are more regional. Holy Mackerel is a definite regional brew and probably has very limited distribution but you never know. let me know if you find it.
