Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti And Steak

An Abominable Day

We had a rare snow in Atlanta that actually stuck around due to the cold weather.  Cold never stops me from using the Big Green Egg so I fired it up in 20 degree weather to grill some T-Bone steaks.  Since it was a special day weather-wise I decided to try a potentially special beer that had been hanging out in my beer fridge for nearly a year.  That beer was the Oak Aged Yeti by Great Divide Brewing:

This Yeti Is For Real

Oak Aged Yeti is an excellent beer.  In fact, based on the score, It’s tied with a couple of others as the best beer I’ve had, so far…. :-)

The thing that did this was the fact that the appearance, aroma, taste, and drinkability are so well meshed.  The beer pours stout dark with a great, mocha colored head that doesn’t go away.  Lacing is excellent.  The aroma and taste are a combination of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and dark fruit.  There is a nice crisp, slightly bitter finish.  This beer completely impressed me and went great with the T-Bone steak.  As you know, I like Stouts, a lot, so I’m predisposed to favor them.  But, Oak Aged Yeti is a great beer, regardless of how I feel.  If you like Stouts you MUST TRY this beer!  I’m Really looking forward to trying Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti that’s currently in my fridge.  Great job Great Divide!

The Espresso Oak Aged Yet is amazing. There is a slight pepper burn to it which is odd but it works well and balances out the sweetness a bit more.

I said in the video that I had the Espresso but it’s actually the Chocolate. But, I’m looking forward to trying the Espresso version for sure! Maybe I’ll buy a bottle to put away so I can have it sooner. My bottle of Chocolate Oak Aged is next up though.

Mark, I think you’re written score card is off – the total should be 46, not 47 :)

Either way, I almost picked a bottle of this up this past weekend but thought against it (went with Mikkeller’s Beergeek Breakfast instead). Now I feel obligated to grab a bottle or two next time I am out!

Good eyes! The score should be 46, so I corrected it in the post. It was real close and I eventually decided that I’m reserving 47-50 points for something so fantastically, stupendously great that I’m left speechless at the end (that might be hard to do) :-)

You didn’t go wrong with the Mikkeller, that’s a great beer as well! How did you like it?

I haven’t tried the beergeek yet. I’m saving it for this weekend, think I might do I “breakfast for dinner” and enjoy it with that (idea stolen directly from your video)!

Looking forward to your other reviews, they are becoming better the more you do them.

Breakfast for dinner is a great thing! You will probably love the beer, especially if you make some good waffles or pancakes to go with it.

I appreciate the encouragement! I’m enjoying doing the videos and I hope I’m getting better at it. I have a lot of good beer coming up, including some Belgian stuff (which I’ve wanted to do more of for a while).
