Founders Breakfast Stout

A Much Anticipated Brew

Founders Breakfast Stout is a beer that I have been wanting to try for well over a year.  The problem is that it is a little tough to get in the first place plus it’s not distributed here in Georgia.  Well, my Brother, who lives in Pittsburgh, was able to find some and send it down with my Parents when they visited over Thanksgiving.  I’ve been itching to drink it and decided that it would be a great beer to have with some leftover dessert on a cold evening:

Wow, Wow, Wow!!!  This is an excellent beer.  If you like Stouts, especially the coffee variety, Founders Breakfast Stout is about as good as it gets. There is a nice strong, but not overpowering, coffee smell and taste. There is also a hint of chocolate that is very nice.  The strong coffee and chocolate aroma and flavor is perfectly balanced.  The beer has a nice creamy mouthfeel (from the Oats) and enough carbonation to help the beer finish crisp and clean.  I started drinking this at about 50-55 degrees and finished it at 60 degrees and it got better as it warmed (like most stouts do).  This is an impressive beer.  The only thing that wasn’t quite as great as I expected (but was still very good) was the head, which was a bit thin.  All in all this is one of the best beers I’ve ever had.  It ranks up there with the Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch that I reviewed back in May as a nearly perfect Stout.  I wish I had an extra case or two of this to put in the basement to drink over the next year.

Get it if you can!

Like you, I had this for the first time this past week (someone was kind enough to send me a bottle of it to try). I loved this beer, but I don’t know if it is my favorite coffee/oatmeal stout I have ever had. A local brewery, Custom Brewcrafters, made a coffee stout with Sumatra coffee beans and it was very similar to this beer (unfortunately only available on tap). I have a friend in Pittsburgh that might be able to get me some more brews from Founders…I go crazy not being able to pick it up locally :)

So far, the Founders is at the top of the list along with Beer Geek Brunch. It’s a close call between those two. The Rogue Double Black Stout w/Coffee was pretty delicious also. I’m sure I’ll find a few others that are similar. I have a Southern Tier Jah-Vah that I’ll be trying here pretty soon as well.

Founders arrives in Atlanta sometime next month!

I’m very envious! Founders Breakfast Stout is near the top of my list of beers to get hold of, but I don’t fancy my chances here in the UK. A few months ago, though, one of the British online beer retailers managed to get some other Founders beers (Curmudgeon, Dirty Bastard and Double Trouble) and they were all really excellent.

    Happy New Year!

      Hey Michael,

I was lucky my Brother was able to get some and get it to me. Apparently Founders will start distributing here in Georgia soon! I’m looking forward to that for sure.

      Happy New Year!

I think HopCity will be getting some Founders within the next week!
