OK, the Atlanta area is in one of the coldest periods of the year. Not cold by Northern standards, but still cold. Being from the North originally and only having moved to Atlanta a couple of years ago from Chicago, I’m still not too affected by temps in the 20’s or high teens like we’re having here right now. It is definitely funny when everyone here gets out their “puffy coats” if the temp is below 40 degrees
Cold Weather BBQ
With the “cold” weather here I thought I’d get outside, fire up the Big Green Egg, and do a little outdoor cooking in the sub freezing “extreme” temps:
I had a little fun with this video but the important thing is that you don’t have to stop using your BBQ in the Winter. Just bundle up and get out there and cook!
What is the coldest weather you’ve used your BBQ or grill? I’m sure some of you have cooked outdoors in near zero (or below) temps. Tell us about it in the comments.

I barbecue all the year around, but where I live it doesn’t get any colder than low thirties. What really deters me is a driving cold rain….I live in Oregon. Anyway, like your blog and the best to you!
Hi Thom,
Thanks for reading and commenting! I haven’t been deterred by much as far as weather goes, especially down here in GA. It never really gets too cols for BBQ. The rain can be a bit of a problem
but I just move the Big Green Egg closer to the door and that helps keep me dry. Keep reading and happy BBQ’ing.
I know exactly what your talking about! Living in Colorado sometimes grilling has to happen in a couple feet of snow! people look at me like I’m crazy! Check out our Weber website for some good methods and recipes that I enjoy using in cold weather grilling.(http://weber.com/recipes/Recipe.aspx?rid=62).

BTW… check out our new video series “Weber Grill Master”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRN-VTuA0aw Grilling experts Jamie Purviance and Steven Raichlen compare notes on grilling techniques, what inspired these classically trained chefs to pursue the art of cooking with live fire, and find out what led to their biggest grilling mistakes.
Hey Mark, I have 3 questions for you.
First I just want to say that I subscribed to your Youtube channel about a 1 month ago and have really enjoyed your vlogs. (Fuchs913)
My first question is where do you get your beer? Do you buy it all from a local store in Georgia, or do you have some shipped to you? (If that is legal?) I live in Central NY now and have a lot of trouble finding a decent selection with a lot of variety at any of the local beer stores. It kind of makes me sad because I don’t realize how good I had it in my hometown of Rhinebeck, NY when I worked at Beverage Way while in High School, Beverage Way is essentially a Warehouse filled with beer from all over the world, what a great job that was for a high school senior. Anyway just wondering where you find the variety of beer you consume?
Second question: After watching your video on the 2009 Eggfest, I went to the website, but cannot find any information on how much a BGE cost or even how one would place an order on their site, it’s not very user friendly at all. Do you know how much one cost? and what size is your BGE?
Third question is just out of Curiosity, what is your day job or your 9-5?
Thanks Mark and keep doing what your doing, love the Beer Reviews!!!
Sincerely Cold in Upstate NY,
Jon
Hi Jon!,
I’m glad you enjoy my site and my videos. To answer your questions:
1. I buy almost all of the beer I drink at local stores here in the Atlanta area. There are several decent stores that have a good selection of beer. One thing that bugs me a little is that Georgia has a silly 16%ABV limit on beer. While that doesn’t affect me too much it means I can’t get something like Dogfish head 120 minute IPA, which I really want to try. I don’t do beer mail as of yet because it’s illegal to ship beer via USPS and expensive to maintain an address at a UPS store that could receive packages.
2. Big Green Eggs are fantastic, but a little expensive. I have a Large, which retails for $699 or so. I got mine at the 2006 Eggtoberfest for about a 30% discount. They are only sold through dealers. Here’s their support page, the dealer locator is in the upper left. http://www.biggreenegg.com/customer_services.html plug in your zip code to find the closest dealer.
3. In my “real” life I work with a small financial planning firm, which is in an office all day long. That’s why I look forward to doing outdoor activities like bike riding.
Keep reading/watching and commenting and try to stay warm up there!
Mark
