A Stout On The Porch
This past weekend had almost perfect Fall weather here in Atlanta. The daytime temperatures were in the high 60′s/Low 70′s and the evenings were crisp and cool, perfect for sitting out on the porch and enjoying a beer. I decided to have a stout and choose Rip Tide from BrewDog. Rip Tide is an Imperial Stout with 8%ABV and 65 IBU’s. I have been looking forward to trying this beer for a while, especially after the great experience I had with their Punk IPA back in the Spring.
Rip Tide is a tasty beer. The beer pours a very dark brown, not quite “stout dark”. It looks great in the glass and lacing is pretty darn good. There is a definite dark fruit component to the aroma which isn’t as prominent in the taste, which has more of a chocolate and coffee flavor. The 65 IBU’s are there, just not a lot. Drinkability was OK but the 8%ABV lets you know this is a definite sipper. This is another good beer from the crew at BrewDog. If you like Stouts and/or Porters Rip Tide will probably be an enjoyable beer. Give it a try and see for yourself.
Here is the score:
- Appearance- 8 points (out of 10)
- Smell- 7 points (out of 10)
- Taste- 18 points (out of 20)
- Drinkability- 7 points (out of 10)
Total 40 (out of 50) Points- A 4 Mug Rating

Hey Mark,
Sorry I haven’t been around for a while, been moving house and starting a new job… I’ve been keeping up with your eating, drinking and videos just not had a chance to comment!
Great to see you drinking and reviewing this beer, it’s great, I love it. One of the best british stouts, up there with Old Engine Oil, which I know you’ve also enjoyed.
Mark,
No problem. Hope the move and new job are going well! I’ve definitely been drinking some good beers lately and the Rip Tide was fantastic. Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons as far as beer goes. All the good stouts, porters and seasonal beers seem to be available. Plus, most of those beers go great with food!
Try Brew Dogs/Stone Brewings collaboration beer, bashah, if you can find it. It’s the only Brewdog beer I have had so far, but it was fantastic. It definitely sold me on their stuff, and this beer sounds like a good place to start.
I haven’t seen that beer anywhere but I’ll keep an eye out for it. Try some of the other BrewDog stuff if you can. I haven’t been disappointed yet!
I have seen the Brew Dog offerings at my local craft brew store and have been meaning to try them. I guess i really need to jump on this one as stouts are great up here in the cold Chicago north. I just don’t like beers where the alc powers through so harshly.
I’ll let you know what I think,
AL
Hi AL!
Thanks for reading and commenting! Definitely try this beer if you can. The alcohol is there but it’s not offensive at all and doesn’t detract from the beer. Definitely let me know what you think about it. Enjoy!
