Bohemia Mexican Beer And Chicken Adobo Soft Tacos

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

For the most part, I have not been a fan of beers from Mexico.  Most of what I’ve had in the past has not been that good from what I can remember.  But, in the spirit of Cinco De Mayo, I figured I better review one as part of my beer geek duties.  I went to the liquor store and picked up a six-pack of Bohemia, a German Pilsener style Mexican beer which I had never had (at least that I can remember).  A couple of people at the store said Bohemia was a decent beer.  I thought I would see how the beer paired with some spicy food.  So, on my way home I picked up some chicken and chipotle peppers in adobo sauce to make my “not nearly world famous” adobo soft tacos on the Big Green Egg.  Here’s the video:

Appearance: The beer is a straw color, is, clear, and has a barely acceptable head and lacing.  Nothing special.

Smell: The smell is very neutral.  I got a bit of malt, a tad of fruit and vanilla, and a smidge of hops.  There was nothing offensive at all.

Taste: The taste was like the smell, nothing took offense.  I got the same malt, some grain, a little fruit/vanilla, and a tiny amount of hops.

Drinkability: This is the beers strong point.  It has a light body and enough carbonation to finish crisply.  It goes down fairly easy.  Once again there was nothing offensive.

Overall this beer is OK.  It is quite drinkable and has nothing about it that is bad.  There’s not a lot to it.  It does, however, seem to pair very well with spicy food.  I really enjoyed drinking it with my soft tacos.  I think this beer was “designed” to go with spicy food which is not surprising.

Here’s how I scored it:

1. Appearance- 5 points (out of 10)
2. Smell- 5 points (out of 10)
3. Taste- 10 points (out of 20)
4. Drinkability- 7 points (out of 10)

Total 27 (out of 50) Points- 3 Mugs
