Bells Oberon Ale

Here Comes The Sun

As the Summer heat continues I find myself with more and more wheat beers to drink.  Next on the list is Oberon Ale.  This one comes from Bell’s Brewery, Inc. in Michigan.  I think they got the name “Oberon” from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Oberon was the King of Shadows and Fairies).  If so, that makes a lot of sense.  If I’m wrong, would someone from Bell’s please let me know.  Here’s the review:

Appearance: Oberon pours a nice yellow/orange with a bright white head that starts out good but quickly shrinks to a nice thin white ring.  Lacing is good.  The beer is unfiltered and has visible yeast/sediment in it.

Smell: Citrus is the first thing that hits you,  I got Pineapple, Mango, Orange, Lemon.  There is a bit of sweetness as well.

Taste: The taste surprised me a bit.  It was a bit heavier/fuller bodied than the other wheat beers I’ve had.  The fruit is there like the smell with Mango, Peach, Banana.  Not much bitterness at all.  Carbonation seemed a bit lighter as well.

Drinkability: The ABV is 5.8% which seems a bit high for a wheat beer, but it drinks very easy.

Oberon is a very good beer.  It has a nice aroma and flavor that is fairly complex, yet easy to drink.  It has a nice, fuller body and mouthfeel.  The tropical fruit component was very nice.  This is the 1st beer I’ve tried from Bell’s.  It was just recently made available here in GA.  I enjoyed this beer and I’m looking forward to trying the other offerings from this Midwestern brewer.

Here’s the score:

1.  Appearance- 8 points (out of 10)
2. Smell- 8 points (out of 10)
3. Taste- 17 points (out of 20)
4. Drinkability- 7 points (out of 10)

Total 40 (out of 50) Points-4 Mugs

Even though I live just outside of Denver, my local store has yet to stock the 15th Anniversary Ale. I’m going to have to seek that one out as I love just about everything that comes out of that Denver brewery. I like the fact that you are putting your beer reviews to video. You can see at a glance how the beer pours and you can end up doing a lot quicker review of a beer that way.

I typically spend about 5-10 minutes pouring and taking pictures of my beers before I can start evaluating it. I may consider throwing in a video beer review or two out there just to mix things up.

Keep up the good work. Enjoy watching your reviews. – Chipper Dave

I’ve got plenty more where this came from! I’m trying to keep pace with all of the beers I keep buying but it’s tough. So, I’ve dedicated myself to drinking a lot of beer this Summer (I know, tough job, but someone has to do it :-) ) I’ve also got some neat “special features” planned if things fall together. Hopefully they will.

Thanks for supporting this blog. I think it will continue to grow, especially if I can spend some time improving the site and promoting it more. Stay tuned!

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for stopping by, the kind words, and for commenting! I am really enjoying doing these and I think the video component adds a lot to the overall review.

That’s weird that you can’t get the 15 Anniversary Ale locally. I guess, in this one case, I’m lucky I moved away from Ft Collins! I’ve always enjoyed Great Divide’s beers and this one kept that tradition going. If you do get to try it let me know what you think.
