Bell’s Cherry Stout

I’m continuing my Stout kick with an offering from Michigan brewer Bell’s.  I have reviewed only one other of their beers so far, the Oberon Ale, which was pretty tasty.  I have another of their Stout offerings in the wings which I plan on reviewing shortly:

The Cherry Stout is pretty good, but not great.  Don’t get me wrong, this is a tasty beer but overall no one area was fantastic.  As a result it got a lower “4 mug” score.  It ended up being a solid beer overall.  The appearance, smell, and taste were fine but lacked a little.  I was looking for a bit more complexity in the aroma and flavor but got mainly the “cherry juice” and not a lot else.  Drinkability was hurt a bit by the overriding cherry component.  I will definitely enjoy the rest of the six pack that I purchased however and will say that if you like cherry flavors and Stouts you should try this beer.

Here’s the score:

1.  Appearance- 7 points (out of 10)
2. Smell- 7 points (out of 10)
3. Taste- 17 points (out of 20)
4. Drinkability- 7 points (out of 10)

Total 38 (out of 50) Points-4 Mugs

I agree that the Bell’s Cherry Stout is pretty good, but falls short of greatness. However, the newly-released Bell’s/De Proeuf collaboration called VanTwee is one of the best beers released in 2009. I highly recommend grabbing a bottle before it disappears. It has some qualities of the Cherry Stout (Michigan cherry juice was used), but it’s far more complex and has some funky notes from the wild yeast.

  2. If you enjoy Chocolate Covered Cherries … Buy this Beer!
Then get some Chocolate cake or Chocolate,
    ( prefer dense or flour-less cake ).
Eat, sip … Viola, Chocolate Covered Cherries,
far better than the boxed version.

    CHEERS!
