A popular beer in the warmer weather is wheat beer. Avery Brewing, in Boulder Colorado, brews a Belgian Witbier that is spiced with coriander and orange peel. Lets see how it measures up:
Appearance: The beer pours a slightly of-white/light straw color. There is a nice bright white head with OK lacing. The beer is hazy, due to the yeast that remains in the bottle. Not bad.
Smell: There is a grassy/grainy wheat smell backed up with hints of orange, lemon, and other spices. There are no off aromas that I could detect. Good overall.
Taste: The taste is crisp and “zingy” with hints of lemon, orange, and that wheat/grass taste. There is also a bit of a biscuit taste (I think from the yeast) that is there as well. Overall the taste is balanced.
Drinkability: This is a pretty easy drinking beer. The ABV of 5.6% is not too strong. It cuts through the heat of the day and is refreshing. This would be a good 1st wheat beer for people to try. It’s not too intimidating.
This is a good, solid example of a wheat beer. Nothing was fantastic but nothing was bad either. Everything is in its place. Probably the best component is the drinkability. It goes down smooth and easy, perfect for a warm Summer day.
