Anderson Valley Brewing Boont Amber Ale

A New Brewery To Try

A couple of weeks ago we were in Asheville, NC.  When we were there I visited Bruisin Ales which is a great beer-only store.  They carry beers from several breweries that I can’t get here in Atlanta so I picked up some beers to try/review.  The first one I’ll be reviewing is Boont Amber Ale from Anderson Valley Brewing Company.  This is a American Amber/Red Ale:

I really liked this beer.  I haven’t had a lot of Red Ales in the recent past but, based on the Boont, I will be trying more in the very near future.  This beer pours a nice, dark red caramel. It is slightly cloudy with a decent head that stuck around for a while as a thin ring.  Lacing was pretty good.  The aroma and taste had a caramel apple component.  There was also a slightly sweet flavor along with some floral hops.  I also got a bit of cinnamon and some nuttiness which was nice.  The mouthfeel is decent and the carbonation is good.  There was a slight bitterness on the aftertaste which helped to clear everything up.  I wish it was available here in GA because I would be buying quite a bit more of it.  For those of you that can get it, please give it a try because it is a very good beer.

Here’s the score:

1.  Appearance- 7 points (out of 10)
2. Smell- 8 points (out of 10)
3. Taste- 17 points (out of 20)
4. Drinkability- 8 points (out of 10)

Total 40 (out of 50) Points-4 Mugs

This is a beer that I think I might enjoy. I’ll have to seek this one out. Loved the color. I tend to favor the Amber Ale style. I like the fact that it is a bit lower in ABVs also. Sometimes the higher ABVs have more of the “alcohol” flavor than I like, but I guess that’s the point. Just wondering, do you like higher or lower ABVs or does it make any difference to you?

    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hey Scott,

The Boont is a good beer. Definitely give it a try. As to my preference for higher or lower ABV beers, I like them all! The higher ABV ones are very flavorful and usually a little heavier while the lower ABV beers tend to be more refreshing. The one thing I do monitor though is how much alcohol I’m consuming so if I have a high ABV beer I might only have 1 but a lower ABV beer I can usually have 2 of.
