Alright, 2009 is in the books and I finally got all of my rides entered and logged. The result is the following video which shows a little more detail of all the bike riding I did in 2009, my best year yet as far as distance and time spent riding. It was also a record in one other very important category (you’ll have to watch the video to find out but let’s just say it directly relates to the other two parts of this blog’s name)
Here you go:

Mark, great job on the numbers. What a big year. I ended my year at around 3000 or so.
Have you ever done a gear review of your cycling toys?
Thanks! I enjoy riding a lot so it’s really just a matter of finding the time to do it. 3000 is nothing to sneeze at, that’s a lot of riding.
I may just do a review of my bike stuff here at some point. Good idea!
Great year Mark!
I had an interesting year. I rode fewer miles in 2009 than I have since I started seriously cycling in 2006 (only 3191, as opposed to an average of closer to 5000 in previous years.) However, my overall fitness is better because my training has become more well rounded. I’m using spin class for intensity, and I added wight training and a bit of swimming too.
Out of curiosity, why was your overall cycling goal set it time on the bike as opposed to miles?
Thanks Chris!
You had a pretty good year as well. It sounds like you find the indoor workouts to be much more time efficient like I do. It’s hard to beat a good 45-60 minutes of focused effort on the trainer/spin bike for building fitness! I love riding outdoors but it’s hard to maintain a good intensity with all the hills we have here.
I’ve basically decided to train by hours instead of miles because I find it easier to plan out my workouts based on time/intensity. I schedule my weeks based on total hours of riding. The miles fall into place as a result of the time.
